Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa

Rangers FC take on Celtic in the Old Firm Derby on Sunday and Steven Gerrard currently is struggling to have a fully fit squad for the game.

Celtic have more or less wrapped up the Scottish Premiership so this derby might not have any major impact on the title race but surely winning it will be a matter of pride for both these sides.

But going into this weekend, Steven Gerrard has revealed that three of his biggest players remain a doubt for Sunday’s game with one of them already ruled out.

The manager told the BBC: “Defoe is definitely out. There’s a chance for Jack and Tav (for Thursday night). Jack is with us – he got off the bus last night and had an issue with his knee.

“Tavernier tried to train on Saturday on an injury that he came off the pitch with and he made it worse. So he is probably a bigger doubt than Jack.”

Can Rangers pick up a win?

None of these three players played during the past weekend as Rangers beat Ross County 1-0 and right now they are facing a race against time to be fit for derby day.

And this was not enough, Rangers play in the Europa League this week against Bayer Leverkusen meaning Gerrard will first need these players to be fit for Thursday night.

So this midweek clash will be a good indication as to whether Ryan Jack and Tavernier can actually be available for selection against Celtic on Sunday.
