Rangers FC could have to give out £1.1 million this summer but that will not be for the signing of any player.
During a time when Steven Gerrard is taking very careful steps to use money wisely in the transfer window, a potential contract breach might set back the Ibrox outfit large sums of money.
Rangers had entered into a contract with Memorial Walls Ltd to build a memorial wall for the Ibrox disaster as a tribute to the 66 fans who died in 1971.
But now Memorial Walls are claiming that the Glasgow outfit have pulled out of a contract.
The Gers have refused any wrongdoing and they have gone on to claim that Memorial Walls tried to intimidate club legend, John Grieg.
Rangers’ senior counsel Kenny McBrearty QC told the Court of Session in Edinburgh(as reported):
“It is very difficult to see how a 76-year-old man who was captain of Rangers at the time of the Ibrox disaster and expressed honestly held opinion could be said to be inducing a breach of contract.”
Memorial Walls have hit back claiming that they did not try and intimidate Grieg and have also added the fact that Rangers backed out after putting pen to paper meaning they do not have any defence.
Gavin MacColl, QC – working for Memorial Walls Ltd said: “The suggestion that there was an attempt to intimidate witnesses here is simply unfounded.”
If Rangers do lose the case then they will have to shell out around £1.1 million which will certainly be a huge setback for the Steven Gerrard.
The manager needs every penny to rebuild his squad for the upcoming season in order to challenge Celtic for the Premiership title and in such a scenario leaking money for such bad decision will not go down too well with the Gers fans.
