Ever since Rangers FC appointed Steven Gerrard as their new boss, one of the first players that the former Liverpool midfielder had tracked was Everton’s, Alex Denny.

From the first weeks of June, reports had suggested that the Gers want to bring the midfielder to Ibrox on a permanent deal.

Now though those hopes have been seriously dented after the Merseyside outfit announced that Alex Denny had signed a new deal at the club.

While talking to Everton TV, the midfielder said: “To sign my first contract with the club I have been at since I was nine is special for me,

“I am looking forward to continuing my development and getting as close to the first team as I can.

“That [his smooth transition from Under-18 to Under-23 football] is credit to the staff and all the other boys who have helped me.

“There are differences in terms of the intensity but with the help of the staff, and me getting on with it and throwing myself in at the deep end, I took to it well.”

Denny first caught the attention of the Light Blues after his impressive performance for the Everton U23 squad which helped him secure a spot in the first team squad for the Europa League games.

At first, it was being believed that Everton would not try and resist too much if an offer for the 18-year-old came around. So what made the Toffees change their mind?

Well, the Merseyside outfit have been nonexistent in the transfer market this summer and many believe that this lack of activity in the market has prompted the club to hold onto their best academy players.

A few reports are also of the view that while Everton were willing to let go of the player but it was actually Steven Gerrard who failed to convince the youngster that he had a future at Ibrox.

Initially, when Steven Gerrard took charge of Rangers, Alex Denny would have been a great signing for the club but now a couple of months later, missing out on the midfielder does not seem to a very big issue for the club.
