Rangers beat St Johnstone 5-1 at home in the Premiership this weekend and now they welcome Ayr in the quarter-final of the Scottish League Cup.

And as things stand, the manager might be scratching his head his first eleven for the midweek fixture.

Playing in the Europa League last week and then against in the league during the weekend, a number of the first team regulars were scheduled to be given a much-deserved rest against Ayr.

But that would be much easier said than done given, Steven Gerrard has a long list of injury absentees for the League Cup clash.

The first big change that the manager would have wanted to make is in his centre-back area but his summer signing Gareth McAuley is still suffering from calf problems and will not return back to action before the end of this month.

Eros Grezda was also scheduled to get some much-needed game time but the fact that he has not been able to recover from his long-standing ankle problem, Daniel Candeias will once again have to take the field vs Ayr.

21-year-old midfielder Jordan Rossiter is also out with a calf problem and is expected to return back to training next month.

Ryan Jack is another midfielder who is ruled out for the League Cup game vs Ayr owing to a calf issue.

While Steven Gerrard will not have any major problems naming his first XI but the manager would have wanted to play his second fiddle players during this game instead of forcing his regular to crunch out another game.

After the League Cup encounter against Ayr, Rangers hit the road as they travel to the Almondvale Stadium to take on Livingston.
