Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa

Rangers suffered their first defeat of the 2019-20 Premiership season as they went down 2-0 to Celtic FC in the Old Firm Derby.

The Gers went into this match tied on points with their Glasgow rivals but in the end a combination of poor play from the defenders and some good skills from Celtic proved too much to handle for Gerrard’s boys.

Celtic scored the first goal through Odsonne Edouard as he made the most of some shoddy defending and then it was Jonny Hayes who added the second during injury time.

It was an overall poor performance from Rangers as there are not very positives that the manager can take out of the season’s first Old Firm Derby but Gerrard did mark out one player who according to him should hold his head high.

“I’m not pleased with the performance at all,” Gerrard told Rangers TV(as reported by the club’s official website).

“I thought across the board we were not good enough today as a team. Individually we were not good enough either – only Jon Flanagan can be proud of his performance.

“But look, we take the responsibility and we take the criticism as a group, so I’m part of that. We’ll have to take everything that is coming our way, take it on the chin and move on as quick as we can.”

Rangers were looking a more well-oiled machine this season but all that hard work and effort seems to have faded off during the Old Firm Derby.

And if the loss was not enough, Jordan Jones also picked up a straight red card in injury time for a challenge on Celtic substitute Moritz Bauer.

After this loss, Rangers are second in the Premiership table with nine points while Celtic are top of the pack still undefeated.

Neil Lennon had to go through a lot of pressure since taking over Brendan Rodgers late last season but a win in the first Old Firm derby of the season must surely have settled some nerves amongst the fans.
