Real Madrid appointed Julen Lopetegui as their new boss earlier this summer but reports suggest the 52-year-old were not their first choice.

After a successful couple of seasons, former manager Zinedine Zidane chose to step down as the boss of the Los Blancos and this came as a huge shock to Florentino Perez.

No one knew that Zidane was going to make such a call more so just after winning his third Champions League with Real Madrid.

But in Julen Lopetegui, Real Madrid seemed to have found the perfect replacement.

Now though after a couple of months into the new season, Julen Lopetegui is on the brink of being sacked.

And now reports have surfaced which claim that Julen Lopetegui was never the first choice for Florentino Perez.

As per the report, Perez had first contacted Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri but the Old Lady chief chose not to part ways with the club.

Following this, Real Madrid moved their focus the Premier League.

Florentino Perez wanted either Jurgen Klopp or Mauricio Pochettino to replace Zinedine Zidane.

Pochettino was eventually too loyal to Tottenham Hotspur and Jurgen Klopp too did not want to vacate his ongoing project at Liverpool.

Hence, the Los Blancos had to finally settle for Julen Lopetegui who was managing the Spain national team at that moment.

Real Madrid chose to announce their new manager just before the World Cup which meant that the Spanish board sacked Julen Lopetegui days before the tournament began.
