Rangers FC might have picked up only a single win during the new Premiership season but there’s no denying that Steven Gerrard has assembled a wonderful squad.

The Light Blues have a perfect mix of youth and experienced players and if they can start churning out positive results then surely they can challenge the dominance of Celtic.

And one such youngster is 20-year-old Ross McCrorie.

McCrorie is a youth product of Rangers and the Scotland international played 21 games last season.

While the previous managers saw Ross McCrorie as a central defender but Steven Gerrard feels that the youngster will thrive in the holding midfield role – something which even McCrorie agrees with.

And now the 20-year-old has revealed that the credit of his development at Rangers goes to a single senior pro.

McCrorie said: “The big influence on me, in terms of captains, is Lee[Wallace] at Rangers.

“When I first went into the first-team to train, he was the skipper.

“He took me under his wing and was always speaking to me. Especially when I had my two loans at Dumbarton and Ayr.

“Lee would take me to one side and ask how I was getting on.

“He always kept me involved and I could see his leadership qualities straight away. I tried to take little bits from that.

“When I first went up to their training, I was dead quiet and a bit nervous. But as soon as Lee spoke to me, the nerves were gone.

“He made me feel part of it at Rangers. As a captain, there might be boys who aren’t involved so much. So you need to make sure they stay in the group.

“Lee is extremely professional, even in the way he talks to you. You can tell he’s a very intelligent guy.

“Even though he’s had a hard time of it recently with injury, he comes to every game and cheers the boys on.

“And even when he wasn’t training, he was always talking away to me, keeping me on my toes.

“It’s an honour now for me to captain Scotland U21’s. I didn’t expect it as I missed our last two games with an injury.

“I only found out I was captain just before the Andorra game last week. It’s special for me and my family.

“I’ve been captain at different age groups for Scotland but the 21s just tops it off. It’s brilliant for myself.

“I’ll say a few words to the boys before the game then try to do my talking on the pitch. I’d like to think I’m a leader in the way I play.”
