SPFL have finally passed a resolution to end the 2019-20 season and right now there are just waiting for a green light from UEFA.

At first, the governing body of football in Europe was not too happy at the prospect of leagues ending abruptly but in a recent statement, they have hinted at a possible change of heart.

The official statement read: “UEFA today met its 55 member associations via videoconference and presented an update of the options being looked into by the two working groups that were created mid-March.

“A variety of calendar options were presented covering both national team and club competition matches.

“There was a strong recommendation given to finish domestic top division and cup competitions, although it is understood that there may be some special cases. With this in mind, UEFA is currently developing some guidelines concerning participation in its club competitions, in order to assist its member associations in case of a cancelled league or cup.”

This is certainly great news for Celtic FC and there have been some reports claiming that SPFL can officially announce the Bhoys as the champions this week thanks to UEFA’s leniency.

Now though it’s being said that UEFA want the various domestic leagues to hold onto their decisions in order to see if the situation in their country changes in the coming few weeks which is the main reason why the SPFL will be brave enough to announce Celtic the champions.

A Hampden source said last night: “UEFA clearly want leagues around Europe to hold off before making any final decisions on ending this current season so they are unlikely to give permission for countries to do their own thing. There is no chance the SPFL will just ignore this and declare Celtic champions on Friday.

“But it is expected they will be open to requests from any league which has ‘exceptional circumstances’ and the SPFL will most probably be one of them as our new season is scheduled to begin with the League Cup in the second week of July.

“And that’s before the latest Government advice is even factored into the equation as well as the First Minister’s warning about the dangers of playing games behind closed doors.”

This is great news for Rangers FC who desperately want the season to continue not only because they want to stop Celtic from winning the title but also because they do not want the SPFL to ruin their ongoing Europa League campaign.
