Spurs have entered advanced talks to sign Middlesbrough wing-back Djed Spence, a player who has been previously linked with Arsenal.

Sky Sports, along with various other media outlets are claiming that Tottenham have stepped up their interest in the Boro youngster and they are hopeful a deal will be struck in the coming days.

Djed Spence is a youth product of the Boro academy but he spent the previous season out on loan with Nottingham Forest. It was here that he caught the attention of all the major Premier League clubs as he was one of the standout players in the Championship.

Antonio Conte has had to chop and change players in order to find a suitable right wing-back and this move for Djed Spence just goes on to show that the Spurs boss does not have full confidence in Doherty or Emerson Royal.

Will Arsenal challenge Spurs for the 21-year-old?

Mikel Arteta would love to bring in extra competition for the right full-back/wing-back role but right now he has two solid defenders in the form of Tomiyasu and Cedric.

The Arsenal manager has other pressing issues to attend to which is why we don’t think the manager is going to waste his time or energy in challenging Spurs. Tomiyasu and Cedric have done pretty well in tandem so there’s no urgent need for a wing-back.

Spence is without a doubt one of the most talked-about youngsters coming out of the Championship in recent years but Arsenal have their summer priorities properly lined up.

Can Djed Spence become a success at Spurs?

Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have both failed to win the trust of their manager and for a fee of just £20 million, the Boro man can turn out to be a wonderful signing.

He’s just 21 years old so he has age on his side plus the Spurs boss has plenty of players for the right wing-back role meaning the youngster won’t be thrown into the deep end of the pool straight away.

Finally, he may or may not turn out to be a star player, only time will determine that but for just £20 million, he’s definitely a risk worth taking.
