Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa

Rafa Benitez might be on his way out of Newcastle United at the end of this month as reports have suggested that the club will not offer him a new deal. And if that happens the Steven Gerrard could be brought in as a replacement.

Steven Gerrard took charge of Rangers last summer and during the past season, the former Liverpool man has done some amazing job at the club.

But recent reports are abuzz that the Magpies have made a list of the possible candidates who could replace Rafa, and the name of Steven Gerrard ranks quite high on that.

The Guardian reported: “If Rafa does go at the end of June, Newcastle will have their pick of three top-drawer Premier League midfielders – to replace him as manager.

“First up, none other than his one-time Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who has done a possibly good, possibly bad job so far at Rangers. Ashley is also reportedly considering Patrick Vieira, who has done quite-well-we-think at Nice.”

While Newcastle United are confident that they can lure in Steven Gerrard this summer but according to Gers legend Ally McCoist, the former Liverpool man will not desert the Teddy Bears.

Here’s why:

“I think Rangers are a bigger club. I think Newcastle play in a far better league,” Ally McCoist told talkSPORT.

“That’s the way I see it at this moment in time, and you know what I think of north-east football.

“I absolutely love the people of the north-east and I love the football in the north-east, but what kind of step would it be for Steven Gerrard?

“They’re both massive clubs. They’re actually similar clubs in terms of their support.

“I think they’ve got absolutely fanatical support. Great support. Best supporters in the country I feel, so I’m not sure where I’d sit on it to be honest with you.

“But I’m not sure right now it would be a great move for Steven Gerrard to be honest with you, because he certainly has unfinished business at Rangers.

“I wish Newcastle all the very best in their search for a new manager, but leave ours!”
