There has been a lot of chatter over the past couple of weeks about the restart of the Premier League and on Friday the authorities met once again to discuss the fate of the 2019-20 season.

While the board was positive about finishing the remaining matches but they are yet to provide a date of resuming training by claiming they will be adhering to the guidelines of the government.

And now speaking on this journalist Matt Lawton believes the maximum vote policy will not be coming into play for this one meaning all the 20 clubs will have to agree to restart the campaign.

Lawton told Sky Sports: “I think the 14 clubs [majority vote principle] would become irrelevant in this situation. If one club decides they don’t want to play, l think it would be incredibly hard to argue against. If a club doesn’t want to play, they have a very strong argument – especially if we go to neutral grounds.

“The first argument is the most obvious one and that’s the safety of their players. If one club and their players are not happy about playing, and their safety cannot be guaranteed, and l can’t see how it can be guaranteed…then a club could very legitimately argue against that [restarting the season].

“Secondly is the neutral venues idea. It’s inevitable that is the only way they are going to finish the season.

“And there is a very legitimate argument against that the integrity of the competition is too far a departure from what they all signed up for in August.

“I think if one club decides they don’t want to play, I don’t see how they can be forced into it and it would be the end of the situation and the season would have to be curtailed.”

Will the Premier League restart be foiled?

The Scottish Premiership recently ended with a maximum majority voting but Lawton believes the EPL will not go on this path.

And if this is truly the case then it will be a real pain to restart the games since a number of clubs could have serious concerns over the safety of their players and their staff during this period.

But we have a feeling despite all the concerns, all the 20 Premier League clubs will agree to resume the games as early as possible since all the teams, no matter small or big, are facing real financial crunches. So if they cannot manage to kickstart their systems soon enough then a number of them could face serious budgetary issues in the coming months.
