Celtic FC have shown an interest in signing Norwegian right-back Omar Elabdellaoui.

Omar Elabdellaoui started his youth career at Manchester City and after moving through a number of clubs, the full-back has been playing for Greek club Olympiacos for a couple of seasons now.

And some reports have suggested that the Hoops are planning to make a move for the right-back sometime this month.

But one big problem with this deal was the Europa League.

Celtic FC have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League this season and if they were to sign Omar Elabdellaoui then it would mean the full-back would not be able to play for the Hoops in the Europa League given he has already featured in the tournament during the first half of the season for Olympiacos.

But now UEFA have chosen to scrap that one club rule meaning a player would be free to play for more than one club in both the Champions League as well as the Europa League during a single season.

Celtic were in Group B of the Europa League alongside the likes of Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig and they have managed to secure the second spot on the table.

And now if they go on to sign Omar Elabdellaoui from Olympiacos then the right-back would be able to play for the Glasgow side in the Europa League.

Omar Elabdellaoui has so far played in 22 games for Olympiacos this season – scoring two goals and providing five assists.

And there is no doubt that the 27-year-old will be a fine addition to the Celtic squad.

Omar Elabdellaoui joined Olympiacos in 2014 and then went on to sign a new extension in the summer of 2017.

TransferMarkt current values the full-back at 4 million euros and with his current deal expiring in 2021, Celtic will have to pay much more than that if they wish to sign the Norwegian.
