Steven Gerrard wants Filip Helander at Aston Villa

A number of Premier League greats from yesteryear have gone down the managerial line and most of them are doing pretty well.

Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs was the big name to take up the role of a manager this year when he was appointed the manager of the Wales national team in January.

This was followed by Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard.

During the course of the summer, Frank Lampard was appointed the manager of Championship side Derby County on a three-year contract while his fellow England teammates took charge of Scottish giants Rangers FC.

Lampard has been churning out good results in the second division of English football and Derby are now fourth on the league table with 12 points.

Gerrard’s side, on the other hand, are struggling a bit in the Scottish Premiership as the Light Blues have managed to pick up only five points from their four games.

Nevertheless, both the England Internationals have done some pretty amazing job with their clubs during the course of the summer and now Ryan Giggs has come out to applaud their efforts – claiming that Lampard and Gerrard give him ample motivation to succeed as the Welsh boss.

Giggs said: “I have been following both of them and they have both had good starts.

“It is pleasing to see as a player who has played at the top level that can you go and do it as a manager?

“We will just have to wait and see how they do but they have made good starts.

“It is like players if you are good enough, it doesn’t matter what your age is.

“They have prepared as best they could, just like I did.

“If it is a new era I don’t know yet but we are football people.

You can do TV work which is great but you just miss that football bit where you are out on the pitch and preparing teams and that buzz of games as well.”

Ryan Giggs will be managing the Welsh National side for the first time in the UEFA Nations League which will be his first major tournament in charge.
