Amongst all the crazy summer spending, Premier League giants Chelsea have also managed to bring in defender Thiago Silva as a free agent after his contract with PSG expired.
The 35-year-old recently played in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich and shortly after that game, he announced his move to the English top division.
Many people have since questioned Lampard’s decision to sign a player who is on the final stages of his professional career but now the manager has finally explained why he chose to sign Thiago Silva.
He told the club’s official website: ‘With Thiago Silva, we are looking at a player I know very well, pretty much as we all do.
‘He brings great experience for us, he is still playing at a massively high level, as we saw in the Champions League final and games towards the final, so I expect him to come and bring that, bring his experience, leadership and his qualities.
‘It is going to be very important for us.’
‘We have a relatively young squad, we saw that last year, there were games afterwards when I was probably asking for more voice and some more leadership in different ways and he brings that naturally straight away, and also on the pitch he can help talk and be the player that he is which means affecting others.
‘On those levels, I hope he brings that. I am pretty sure he will with the qualities we know he has, so I am excited for when he joins up.’
Thiago Silva will be 36 years old by the end of next month and but with the kind of energy he showed in the UCL final, we are more than certain the Brazilian will be one of the first names on Lampard’s team sheet next season.
It remains to be seen how the centre-back copes up with the physicality of the Premier League since with all due respect the Ligue 1 is nowhere close to the English top flight.
But having said all this, Frank Lampard has surely managed to replace David Luiz’s seniority and experience by bringing in Thiago Silva.
