Arsenal lost their previous Premier League encounter against Everton at Goodison Park.

The game saw only one goal which came courtesy Phil Jagielka in the 10th minute and despite having charge of the match for most of the 90 minutes, Arsenal failed to pick up even a single point.

And now speaking after the match, Unai Emery has revealed the reason why his team performed so poorly especially in the second half of the match.

Emery said: “The two halves were very different. First half we were consistent defensively but didn’t create a lot of attacking moments and they scored from a throw-in.

“In the second half we were better offensively but defensively there were more chances for them.

“We needed a change in the attacking third but I didn’t want to lose the balance defensively like we lost it.

“We know we needed to be strong and solid and to be competitive. After the negative result after the first half we changed things defensively and it gave us better options for 45 minutes but we could not find a goal.

“In the first half, we were consistent. We conceded good chances for them, they scored from one throw-in. In the attacking third, we needed more.

“If the result was what we deserved in the first half we can continue in the second half and find moments to take better results. We needed to change quickly.

“We decided to play 4-2-3-1 and we lost the chance to be defensively consistent.”

With this loss, Arsenal are now fourth on the league table one point behind Spurs who sit on third.

But the biggest concern for Emery is the fact that both Man United and Chelsea are breathing down their necks.
