Goalkeeper Craig Gordon left Celtic FC as a free agent last month but the Bhoys have offered him a new deal to return to the club next season.

Neil Lennon is frightful that Fraser Forster will not remain at the club next campaign due to Chelsea’s interest in the 32-year-old which is why the Parkhead outfit have offered a new and improved deal to Gordon, in hopes that he comes back.

But speaking about the37-year-old’s possible future, Noel Whelan has explained why the shot-stopper could snub Celtic and head to St Mirren Park in the summer.

“I think he wants to play football first and foremost,” he told Football Insider. “He wants to use up all the remaining juice he has in the tank.

“He wants to see his career out being number one somewhere. He has won the trophies and at this stage of his career, he will want to finish playing.

“He has been at Hearts before but does he want to go down to the second division when he can play in the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren.

“I think he will choose St Mirren. It is not far from Glasgow and it would be a very easy transition for him.

“He would be playing in the top division where I think he deserves to finish his playing career if this is to be his last season.”

Craig Gordon fell down the pecking order last season at Celtic, so much so that he did not even play in a single Premiership match for the club.

And this is a major blow for someone who, just in the previous season, had played in 18 league games for the Bhoys.

So clearly apart from refusing a pay cut, Craig Gordon is also demanding regular playing time in the 2020-21 season which Neil Lennon just cannot promise right now.

Yes, Froster might not come back to Parkhead in the summer but the Bhoys are still likely to bring in a new keeper meaning if the 37-year-old returns to Celtic, he will once again have to play second fiddle.
