Luka Modric beat the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Mo Salah to win FIFA’s The Best Awards for 2018.

But the biggest question for the night was why Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the FIFA awards?

Luka Modric won 29 per cent of the votes coming ahead of Ronaldo (19 per cent), Mohamed Salah (11.2 per cent), Kylian Mbappe (10 per cent) and Messi (9 per cent).

Modric was undoubtedly the deserved winner on the night, capping off a season where he won the Champions League and reached the World Cup final in Russia with Croatia.

But the fact that both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi chose to skip the event has raised a lot of questions with many claiming that Ronaldo showed utter nonprofessionalism by not attending the event just like he did at the UEFA Awards a couple of weeks ago.

Now though, Marca has come up with an explanation which reveals why Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the FIFA Awards.

As per the Spanish publication, Ronaldo’s non-appearance at the awards had nothing to do with the fact that he was not going to win the award but because of the tight fixtures for Juventus.

Juventus played Frosinone on Sunday – a game which the Turin outfit won 2-0 and they are back in action once again on Wednesday when they take on Bologna at home.

According to Marca, the schedule of Juventus is the only reason why Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the FIFA Awards.

Cristiano Ronaldo came second in The Best nominations winning 19 per cent of the votes – 10 per cent less than his former teammate Luka Modric.
