Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid during the summer to join Juventus during the summer transfer window and this move left the whole footballing world in shock.

And there were several reasons why this high-profile caused a fair bit of stir amongst the fans.

Firstly everyone thought that Ronaldo was nowhere close to leaving Real Madrid and secondly the football pundits were convinced the Portuguese’s next move would be to the MLS in order to play out his final days – much like every other high profile star.

But the fact that he joined Juventus meant business.

And there were several questions as to why Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid and chose to join a direct European rival.

At first, it was believed that Ronaldo had a fall out with the Madrid management prompting his to exit the Bernabeu.

Other reports sighted that he wanted a new challenge having won everything with the Los Blancos.

Now though Sam Wallace of the Telegraph has given a totally new angle as to why Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid during the summer.

According to the journalist, Madrid opted to sell off their superstar in order to reduce their wage bills.

“Without his €100 million sale to Juventus, which also wiped out his €42 million annual wages, Madrid would be posting a €87 million loss rather than a €43 million profit,” Wallace said.

“The accounting impact of replacing Ronaldo with the Dominican Republic striker Mariano, re-signed from Lyon, is €96 million: Mariano cost €20 million, spread over five years, making his book cost this year just €4 million.

“He earns €34 million annually less than Ronaldo, altogether lifting €130 million off the costs.”

So clearly the reason why Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid was down to the fact that the Los Blancos could no longer bear the burden of his high salary.
