Billy Gilmour has been gathering praise during the past two weeks for Chelsea after his stellar performances against Everton and also against Liverpool.

The youngster was on song for both these matches – looking assured on the ball in both these matches and in fact, he was so good that Roy Keane chose to praise him.

And after these two fine outings, there has been a buzz that Billy Gilmour is in line to get his first national team call-up for Scotland.

But now that seems very unlikely since the former Rangers man has been selected for the Scotland U21 side earlier this week and now coach Steven Raid has explained why the youngster will not play any part for the senior side later this month.

Raid said, as quoted: “Billy is definitely a player with a bright future, that’s for sure. To play the way he has, against that level of opponent, is incredible.

“Not only was there confidence in himself to perform, but you could other Chelsea players wanting to give him the ball.

“Sometimes with younger players, there might be a reluctance to trust them with the ball but at every opportunity he was on the ball, looking to play forward and be positive.

“If he carries on playing like that then obviously you can’t ignore it. He’s a top young player.

“But that’s a position we are really strong in at the minute. We are blessed with really good midfielders and hopefully, everyone is going to click in time for the Israel game.”

Is it a good thing for Billy Gilmour?

After his meteoric rise to the top, there have been a number of people who have urged Gilmour’s close associates to come out and help the player keep his feet on the ground.

And maybe that is why his omission for the upcoming EURO qualifiers is a good thing for the youngster.

Surely, Billy Gilmour would have been hoping for a national team call-up and this snub might very well act as a reality check forcing him to work even harder and thereby helping him to cement a place in the starting lineup for Chelsea.
