Goalkeeper Craig Gordon is now a free agent after his deal with Celtic FC expired last month. And according to Noel Whelan, the 37-year-old should be held back by Neil Lennon in some capacity for the upcoming season.

Whelan told Football Insider“He’s been there a long time, a great servant to the club – maybe they’re not ready to let him go. Maybe there’s something in the capacity of a coaching role for him there.

“I think that would be massively beneficial not only to the club but to young players coming through as well. You don’t get many better; an international, knows the club inside out, won things over and over again with Celtic.

“You don’t just let players like that go without thinking can we fit him in somewhere within this club – if not in a playing capacity, then in a coaching role.

“He’s got so much to offer young players coming through that it would be a shame to see a player like that disappear from Celtic when he’s given so much service to that football club.

“Maybe there is something there and maybe they’re waiting for something to come out that will say he will be a coach at the football club. I would love to see that happen because I think he’s got too much to offer these young players.”

Will Craig Gordon remain at Celtic next season?

The Bhoys have offered Craig Gordon a new deal at the club and right now the 37-year-old is pondering over the decision of whether he should stay or leave Park Head.

During the 2019-20 season, the keeper did not feature even in a single Premiership game for Celtic FC and if he does hang around, things are not going to get any more favorable for the veteran keeper.

Gordon is looking to join a new side which can offer his a chance of playing regular football and as per the BBC, St Mirren happen to be one of his potential suitors.

St Mirren have reportedly held talks with Craig Gordon over the past couple of weeks but the shot-stopper is yet to make a final call about his future.

Neil Lennon will like to hold onto the 37-year-old as a backup keeper but we don’t think Celtic will be too worried about the player leaving since the manager is already looking to bring in a new keeper during the summer.
