Chelsea in the hunt for a new goalkeeper have now made yet another move for Rennes’ 28-year-old keeper Edouard Mendy, according to Goal.

The report claims: “Chelsea have made an improved bid of €20 million (£18m/$24m) for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Goal can confirm.

“With the future of current No.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga in doubt, the Blues have identified Mendy as an ideal option to provide competition for the Spaniard.

‘The Blues boss is now hoping to bring in another option between the posts, though Kepa could be heading for an exit with Sevilla and Valencia having registered interest in a loan.

‘Rennes are determined to hang on to the 28-year-old, however, after the Senegalese international helped his team to their first-ever Champions League spot with a third-place finish in Ligue 1 last term.”

Will Edouard Mendy replace Arrizabalaga?

It’s an open secret that Frank Lampard wants to replace his current No 1 Kepa Arrizabalaga as soon as possible and as of now, it seems like Edouard Mendy is his biggest and safest bet.

If this new offer is approved by the French club then surely the 28-year-old will be a bargain buy given the current market prices but we are sure that Lampard will bring in a new keeper only when Kepa’s exit has been secured.

A number of Spanish clubs are interested in signing him up on loan but his wages are turning out to be a big roadblock for the concerned sides.

If the Blues really want to replace Kepa with Edouard Mendy during the 2020/21 season then they have no other option but to absorb the major burden of the Spaniard’s salary in his loan deal.

Edouard Mendy played the Ligue 1 season opener for Rennes but he missed his side’s match on Saturday due to personal reasons.
