Japhet Tanganga has one more year left on his current deal at Tottenham Hotspur and there’s a big chance the defender might not sign a new deal.

The 21-year-old was set to be a free agent this summer but Spurs have triggered the one-year extension to help them negotiate a new and improved deal. But things are starting to getting messier with each passing week.

As per reports, Spurs are in advanced talks with the player but he’s said to have rejected the initial offer since it was not to his liking. And according to former Spurs man Paul Robinson, Jose Mourinho might have no other option but to sell off Japhet Tanganga only because of his agent.

Robinson told Football Insider: “They have to tie him down to a new deal.

“Tanganga has done really well. He has had an impact since he has come in and he deserves a new contract.

“I suspect the old contract will be very different to his old one. You hope that the club reward him in line with where he has progressed to this year.

“The worry is that his agent has got to him, put a lot of astronomical figures in his head and told him he can get him this, that and the other at another club. You hope that the contract negotiations are going well with Spurs.

“It is a great club to develop at as a player. Jose is a great manager. If you are signing the likes of Umtiti and have Alderweireld alongside you it is a good place to learn and grow.”

This season, Japhet Tanganga has played in only 13 matches across all competitions for Spurs but he’s really caught the attention of a number of people, including Jose Mourinho.

And given that Jan Vertonghen could be on his way out of the club in the summer, the signing of a new deal by Tanganga becomes even more important.

While Mourinho will be given a hefty transfer budget at the end of this season but the last thing he will want to do is sell off a young centre-back and spend money to bring in a replacement.
