Portsmouth FC are pretty confident they will be able to keep Rangers loanee Ross McCrorie at the club on a permanent basis next season.

The defensive midfielder is a product of the Gers academy but he’s has found it really hard to break into the first-team which is why last summer he was sent out on loan to League One side Portsmouth FC.

The player’s loan deal with Pompey expires in the summer and he is scheduled to return back to Scotland in the summer but now he’s dropped a bombshell by claiming that he needs to reconsider his future at the end of this season.

The 22-year-old said: “It’s not something I have really thinking about at the minute. I’ve had a few chats with Kenny Jackett and Mark Catlin but that stuff remains private.

“My contract runs at Rangers for another two years but now I’m just concentrating on getting back, finishing the season and seeing where Pompey can finish.

“I gave a good account of myself at Rangers last season and played plenty of games. For me, I wanted to go somewhere and play a lot of games week in, week out and get a sense of being treated like a proper first-team player. We’ll wait and see what happens. I’m still a first-team player at Rangers but since I’ve gone to Pompey it’s been good.

“It’s definitely something I’ve got to think about come the end of the season regarding my future and that kind of stuff. But it’s not something I’m really concentrating on that at the moment.’

“I want to be playing somewhere and not be out on loan. I want to be somewhere settled and playing week in, week out – that’s my aim.’”

Should Rangers let Portsmouth FC sign McCrorie?

McCrorie’s spell at Pompey is the third loan of his career, so clearly he is not breaking into the Rangers’ first-team anywhere in the near future.

But some people still think Steven Gerrard should still be holding onto him due to his versatility. The player is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play as a central defender as well as a right-back. And these qualities can really come in handy for the Gers next season.

The player though is not too keen to move out on yet another loan deal and has previously hinted that he wishes to settle down permanently, even if that means moving out of Ibrox.

And with so many midfielders at his disposal right now, we do not think Gerrard will force the issue too much in terms of trying to convince the player to remain at the club.

McCrorie is currently valued at €900,000 and has two years left on his current deal, so if Portsmouth FC are willing to pay a handsome price for the player, Rangers should not have any major objections to this transfer.
