Chelsea have managed to agree on a deal to sign Timo Werner from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and according to pundit Steve Nicol, this could be a really bad trade for Tammy Abraham.

Werner has been in red hot form for Leipzig this season, scoring 25 goals in just 30 leagues games and as per Nicol, the 24-year-old might just push Tammy Abraham down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

‘I don’t believe Frank and Chelsea are going to change the way they play,’ the ex-Liverpool defender said on ESPN, via Metro.

‘And you have to say that signing Werner would spell the end for Tammy Abraham. I mean goodness knows what is going through his head.

‘Allegedly Frank has been telling Werner that he is going to build the team around him so you don’t build your team around a wide midfielder.

‘You build through the spine so that means straight away that Tammy Abraham is in trouble.

‘It’s a good move from Frank though because he is trying to take Chelsea from challenging for the top four to competing at the top for the title.’

Is Tammy Abraham set to fall down the pecking order?

Tammy Abraham did make a fine start to the 2019-20 season but since then, a few niggling injuries have halted his progress at Chelsea. So far, he’s played in 25 Premier League games, scoring 13 and assisting four goals.

Lampard does put a lot of faith on the young English striker so the arrival of Timo Werner does not mean an automatic demotion for the 22-year-old.

But with the German international in hand, Lampard does now have a top-quality option upfront so there’s no denying Abraham will have to pull up his socks.

Timo Werner will obviously eye that role down the middle next season and if Tammy Abraham fails to perform, the Chelsea boss will surely not shy away from pushing him onto the flanks or even benching him.

Initially, though we think the Chelsea academy lad will be the one who will play up front while Timo Werner operates down the left-flank, a position which he has occupied a few times this season at Leipzig.
