Man United are agonisingly close to securing a deal for Frenkie de Jong but if Mundo Deportivo is to be believed then their arch-rivals Man City can stage a coup.

According to reporter Gerard Moreno, Barcelona are ready to cash in on Frenkie de Jong due to financial reasons and as things stand, there is a 95% chance that he will join Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

ETH and the midfielder share a great relationship from their Ajax days so it’s not a surprise that United’s new boss has asked his club to try and get a deal done as soon as possible. Moreno has also clarified that Barca are willing to accept around €70m-€80m for the midfielder and a lack of funds is the only reason why they are ready to part ways with him.

Now, in a major twist of events, Manchester City seemed to have joined the race to sign the 25-year-old and there’s actually a reasonable chance that the Cityzens might be able to get to him before their local rivals.

The lure of Champions League football:

Should he leave Barcelona, Frenkie de Jong wants to join a club where he can play Champions League football next season and as things stand, Manchester United cannot offer him that indulgence.

United are gearing up to play in the Europa League next season so there’s a big possibility that the midfielder opts to join Man City where he can not only play in the UCL but will also have a great chance at winning it.

Given how poor Man United have been this season, they can be out of the UCL for more than one campaign and the last thing the midfielder will want is to be part of a two or three-year rebuilding project.

Man City can sign Frenkie de Jong because they have something that Xavi wants:

It’s being claimed that Xavi wants to replace Frenkie de Jong with Man City’s Bernado Silva and if this is true then Man City are automatically in the driver’s seat.

Despite being in top form, Silva has been dropping hints of leaving for a few seasons now and if Man City can get someone like Frenkie de Jong in his exchange then Pep Guardiola won’t think twice.

Paying €70m-€80m will not be a problem for Man City but they will be able to get a big discount if they can offer Bernado Silva in a cash plus player deal. As per Fabrizio Romano, Man United have not yet been able to close the deal so Manchester City have a realistic chance to stage a coup and pick up Frenkie de Jong.
