Jose Mourinho Tottenham take on Chelsea

The 2018-19 Premier League season starts this weekend and this year’s tournament is expected to be one of the toughest in recent history.

Gone are those days when four teams had the monopoly on the top of the table and with the rise of likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the past decade, the Champions League spots have turned out to be a prized trophy, rather than just a formality.

And this season is not expected to be any different.

While the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Man United are expected to battle it out for the championship, clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal will want to get back their Champions League status.

So former Premier League greats, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright gave their predictions as to who will make it to the top four at the end of the season.

Alan Shearer’s prediction:

Shearer feels that Pep Guardiola will guide Manchester City to yet another title while Liverpool and Manchester United will secure the second and third spot respectively.

Tottenham Hotspur will become the fourth team on the table at the end of the season.

Shearer said: “He[Guardiola] will play exactly the same way and they[Man City] are going to be very hard to stop, although I think Liverpool and United will both be a lot closer to them this time.”

Ian Wright’s prediction:

Wright has totally opposite views to that of his fellow pundit and the former Arsenal legend claims that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have what it takes to topple Man City from their throne.

As per Ian Wright Liverpool will win the league while Man City and Manchester United will fellow beneath them, in exactly that order. His former team Arsenal will manage to get back into the Champions League under new boss Unai Emery.

Wright said: “I want this season’s title race to be more spicy and I think it will be,

“If Liverpool can get some impetus, then we don’t know how Manchester City will react under pressure if a team can stay close to them at the end of the season.

“You also have to consider that Liverpool are City’s Kryptonite. That’s why I am backing Jurgen Klopp’s side to pip them to the title.”

It’s interesting to see that both the pundits have ruled out Chelsea from making it to the top four, let alone win the league. And this is pretty contrasting view as many believe that the Blues under Maurizio Sarri might be able to win the title – as per the “new manager effect”.
