Anthony Martial has raised a lot of eyebrows due to his poor form during the past couple of months but he laid to rest a few of those harsh comments after scoring a fine header vs Chelsea on Monday.

Chelsea were clearly the better side during the first half of the game but right before half-time, the Frenchman put United in the lead with a fine header.

And this performance has surely put a lot of confidence back into the player but Paul Scholes has still raised some major doubts over the abilities and the use of the player by his manager.

‘With Anthony Martial, it’s interesting, I don’t know if he’s a wide player, I don’t know if he’s a centre forward,’ said Scholes, via Metro.

‘Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] clearly thinks there’s a centre forward in there and he’s telling him to get in the box as often as he can.

‘Tonight he laboured at times to get in the box, he didn’t really bust a gut. You shouldn’t need to [tell a striker to get into the penalty box], but if you’re Anthony Martial he looks like he needs telling.

‘He looks like he doesn’t take that much information in. Some players are like that, sometimes you tell them once and they’ll do it all the time.

‘He looks like you need to tell him every two minutes, what you want him to do.’

‘If he’s capable of stuff like that, he did it once tonight and he got his goal, so Ole will be after more of that.’

Verdict On Anthony Martial:

The 24-year-old has scored nine goals this season in the Premier League but clearly the centre-forward position has not been suiting him.

Solskjaer wanted Anthony Martial to play upfront after Romelu Lukaku left for Inter Milan and in all honesty, the Frenchman did make a pretty impressive start in his new role.

But during the past couple of months, he has really struggled to put in the shift needed from an out and out striker and maybe it’s time for the manager to try and give Anthony Martial a wider role in the attacking line-up.
