Calum Chambers has been a key figure in defence for Arsenal so far this season but it looks like the player has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

The centre-back ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee during the defeat to Chelsea late last month and now as per reports, he is expected to be on the sidelined for six to nine months.

This is certainly a huge blow for new manager Mikel Arteta who has now hinted that he could be trying to sign a new defender during the January transfer window.

The manager said via The Independent: “That we will try to be in the market to see options that can strengthen the team, that’s for sure and our obligation and we will be working on that.

“My obligation is to give my opinion on the things we can improve. Obviously we have a bad injury with Calum a few days ago that will change our plans at the back.

“The reality is we will not be able to do much. I’m more concerned about getting players back from injury and try to improve the players I have here, get everybody on board and understanding what we’re trying to do.

“And if something extra comes up and we think it is the right opportunity to improve what we have, then let’s do it.”

Many believed that Arteta would refrain from signing a centre-back during the middle of the season but now it looks like he will most certainly have to make a move for a defender thanks to the injury to Calum Chambers.

It’s still unclear whether the Gunners would plan a major defensive overhaul this month but it’s very much evident that they need to bring in a replacement to Calum Chambers if they wish to fight for a Champions League spot.
