It looks like Celtic FC are on the verge of being officially named the champions for the 2019-20 season with UEFA set to ease some of its pressure.

Last week, the SPFL had finally come to a decision to wrap up the season immediately across all the Scottish leagues but the top division required permission from UEFA.

And many believed this is where the problem could arise since the governing body of European football had hinted on harsh measures if a domestic league was finished without playing out its remaining matches.

Now though as per The Sun, UEFA have understood the problems of the smaller leagues in Europe which is why they could and should sanction abrupt ending of domestic leagues.

The report claims: “Ajax chief and former Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar has revealed UEFA have relaxed their threat to ban clubs from leagues like Scotland and Holland from playing in Europe next season.

“European football’s governing body initially reacted furiously to Belgium declaring their season over with president Aleksander Ceferin suggesting leagues that end early without permission due to the coronavirus pandemic could face a European competitions ban next season.”

Van der Sar said: “I’ve spoken to UEFA a lot and the relationship between us now is good, despite us making clear we want to end the Eredivisie immediately so clubs can get paid out.

“I believe UEFA’s position on medium and smaller leagues has changed. Certainly, I no longer believe there will be any possibility of possible sanctions that would exclude teams from European football next season.

“Throughout this, we have been in close contact with UEFA, the European Clubs’ Association and of course all the other teams from our league and there is a growing belief everything will be decided next week.”

Can Rangers stop Celtic FC from being named champions?

It’s only a matter of time before UEFA gives a green light to all the smaller leagues to carry on their wrapping up plans.

But there’s still a chance that Rangers FC could try and knock on UEFA’s door to stop this from happening in Scotland.

Rangers have been claiming that there has been foul play in the voting process for the decision to end the league and if the Gers can provide substantial evidence to back their claim then UEFA might very well opt to launch an investigation thereby halting the process of Celtic FC being named the 2019-20 champions right now.
