Chelsea have extended the current deal for their forward Olivier Giroud meaning the World Cup winner will remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2020-21 season.

An official statement on Chelsea’s website read: “Olivier Giroud will remain at Chelsea for the 2020/21 season.

“An option to extend the striker’s contract by a year was taken last month, ensuring his two-and-a-half-year stay at Stamford Bridge which was due to end at the conclusion of the current campaign will continue.”

This is great news for the out-of-favour forward with many people claiming that Giroud has finally been able to win the trust of his Frank Lampard.

But Le10Sport have now dropped a bombshell by claiming that the Premier League side are still looking for a buyer during the upcoming transfer window

The article claims: “Chelsea have activated the optional year provided for in his contract, allowing his lease to run until June 2021 but Olivier Giroud remains a candidate for departure this summer.

“Warmly courted last winter, Olivier Giroud still has many active tracks for next summer. According to our sources, Olivier Giroud is still a prey of the next summer transfer window.

“By activating this optional year, Chelsea, like Olivier Giroud, are offering themselves security for the coming season.”

Why have Chelsea extended Giroud’s contract?

It looks like both the parties have agreed to the contract extension as a form of security. Primarily due to the possible uncertainty in the transfer market owing to the current lockdown scenario.

Olivier Giroud to Inter Milan

Olivier Giroud knows fully well he will not get game time next season at Stamford Bridge and with clubs like Napoli and Inter Milan still interested in him, the player will be eager to secure a move out as soon as possible.

But earlier he was supposed to be a free agent but now the interested clubs will have to pay a transfer fee in order to bring him on board next season. And some experts believe this arrangement is not going to suit the two Serie A giants.
