Manchester United tried really hard to sign the former Ajax man but despite negotiating for months, the Red Devils failed to bring him on board. A transfer fee was even agreed upon with Barcelona but as per the rumours, the midfielder did not want to join Man United.
Man United have not given up hopes of signing Frenkie de Jong because they will try once again during the upcoming transfer window however, this time they will have to face Chelsea’s challenge because the Blues are ready to spend €80 million for the 25-year-old.
Will Frenkie de Jong move to the Premier League in the summer?
Barcelona need to find €200 million to be able to sign players in the summer which means each one of their players is up for sale – for the right price.
This is one of the main reasons why Manchester United are going to rekindle their interest in the midfielder and this is possibly also the reason why Chelsea have going to try and sign him.
Todd Boehly is not shying away from spending money and if De Jong is really available then he will not hesitate in paying €80-90 million for him.
However, the final decision will be on Frenkie de Jong and if Barcelona really wants him gone then he will choose a club who are playing in the Champions League.
He had rejected Man United primarily because he did not want to play in the Europa League so whichever club fails to qualify for the UCL next season is going to miss out.
Man United should be able to finish in the top four this season but Chelsea are currently 10th on the Premier League table and the only way they will get into Europe’s top tier next campaign is by winning the competition this time around.
