Man City lost 1-0 to Spurs in the Champions League and Ilkay Gundogan claims they have only themselves to blame.

Guardiola set up with two defensive midfielders at the new Spurs stadium and to a large extent, Man City did manage to keep Spurs at bay. At one point it even looked like they would go back to Manchester with a precious away goal.

In the end, though, it was Son Heung-Min who spoiled the party for Ilkay Gundogan and his teammates by scoring a late goal to hand Spurs the win.

And speaking after the game, the City midfielder claimed that they looked nervous and made too many mistakes which helped the home team get the advantage.

Gundogan told Sky Deutschland(as reported by BT): “We were not brave enough in the game and we made a lot of simple mistakes.

“I have the feeling we are nervous in important Champions League games. We always make the wrong decisions.

“In these matches, we always want to do something special because it means (going through to the) Champions League semi-finals. Sometimes less is more.”

Ilkay Gundogan also claimed that Man City would have been in the driver’s seat had Sergio Aguero converted from the penalty spot pretty early on during the game.

“Negative events like that always set us back far too much,” the 28-year-old added.

“Had we scored from the penalty we’d have taken Tottenham apart.

“But instead we withdrew from the game. That must not happen to a big team. That’s why we’re not there yet.”

Man City still have the capability to turn things around but Pochettino will know very well that one away goal in the second leg could turn the tie completely in their favour.
