England take on Germany in the Round of 16 game of the European Championship on Tuesday and Southgate now needs to choose between Mason Mount and Jack Grealish.
Mount is currently isolating due to the COVID protocols and this is why Jack Grealish was used as the attacking midfielder in the Czech Republic game. And it’s safe to say the Aston Villa man came out with flying colours from that match.
The Chelsea man will have to isolate until Monday, June 28, one day before the England vs Germany game so it will be touch and go for him. But according to former England international Joe Cole, Gareth Southgate should be choosing Mason Mount over Jack Grealish(if he is ready).
He has told talkSPORT: “As much as I love Jack, I’d go with Mase ahead of him for this game.
“Jack won’t like this, but having Jack off the bench, if it’s level after 60 minutes, imagine Wembley seeing Jack step up if we need something.
“You need someone on the bench who can change something. Mason’s a little bit more disciplined in the central position which allows you to change the system a little bit.
“It’s like choosing [a favourite] between your kids. Choosing between Mason Mount and Jack Grealish… I love them both!
“Not having Mason [training], I know he’s an intelligent player, but that’s going to be playing on Gareth’s mind. Mason self-isolating might be the reason why Gareth gives Jack the nod instead of Mason because he’d be able to work with Jack in the lead up to the match.
“I still can’t get my head around what the rules and procedures are and why they’ve had to isolate for this long. I don’t understand it.”

Mason Mount was the standout player for England in their first two group games but Jack Grealish has done no damage to his reputation whatsoever with his 68-minute performance against the Czech Republic.

As Cole said, Mount is a much more disciplined and tactical player but if England are to unlock Germany they will need someone who will want the ball at his feet and is ready to run at defenders.
Mason Mount is someone who loves to run into spaces and that will only work when his other teammates can find him.
But Grealish is much more flamboyant and demanding so his teammates can work around him and use the spaces to their advantage.
The lack of training for the Chelsea midfielder is also going to play a big role in the England manager’s selection process and overall we think it’s Grealish who is more likely to get the nod.
