‘This’ West Ham man is automatically getting a new contract at the club: Deserving or not?

West Ham United brought in Pablo Zabaleta from Man City on a free transfer and gave him a two-year deal at the club.

And that deal is set to expire at the end of the current season with many people believing that the full-back would become a free agent.

But now Pablo Zabaleta has revealed that a new one-year contract will automatically be triggered if he manages to feature in 60 per cent of the games during the 2018-19 season.

Zabaleta said: “If I play in 60 per cent of the games, automatically the contract can extend for another season.

“This is something I am not too far away from. If I play a few more games, I will have a chance to sit with the manager and the club and decide what to do.

“I haven’t decided what to do. I don’t want to rush myself or the manager.

“The club brought me in to play for two years and this is all I wanted because I am 34 now. If I do stay then I would understand I would have a different role, not to play as much.

“I know in myself that I cannot play the same amount of games.”

So while a new contract will be triggered but Pablo Zabaleta is still unsure whether he wants to take up the challenge or not.

But we believe a big motivating factor towards making that decision is whether West Ham get to play the Europa League next season or not.

If the Hammers get into Europe next campaign then surely Pellegrini would urge the Argentine to stay at the club. If not then the club should have no problem in setting him free.
