Arsenal appointed Unai Emery as their new boss this summer after Arsene Wenger vacated his chair and the Gunners are finally getting back amongst the big boys this season.
Arsenal made a wobbly start to the new Premier League campaign but since then Unai Emery has managed to steady the ship with the Gunners now sitting in the sixth spot on the league table.
And with all going well under their new boss, Petr Cech has chosen to give the precise reasons as to why the club failed to win any major silverware during the past couple of seasons under the managerial regime of Arsene Wenger.
Petr Cech said(via the Independent):Â “What we lacked in the past – I would say the ‘Arsenal way’ was more important than getting the points sometimes and this is not how you win the league,
“Sometimes you need to make sure you win an ugly game when you are not playing completely well but you just dig deep, close the back door and win 1-0 no matter how.
“I think this is what we lacked over the last three years since I arrived (in 2015). Against Everton, we went through difficult moments in the game but we managed to get the win and with the clean sheet so this is very positive.
“I think the place has become much more demanding in every way so this is great to see because this is what initially drives everybody forward and gives you the kind of kick that: ‘I’m not doing enough to start the game’.
“This is how it should be. We have very healthy competition and we are actually taking the benefit of it.
“This club hasn’t won the league for over 10 years so obviously you need to get back to knowing how to do it.”
Petr Cech has managed to keep his place in the starting line up under Unai Emery despite the club signing Bernd Leno during the summer. And now this statement from the Arsenal No 1 clearly suggests that he was not particularly happy with how things were being conducted by Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal though have got back their big club status – somewhat and now Unai Emery’s first big challenge will be to get the team back to playing Champions League football next season, either by making it to the top four or by winning the Europa League.
