Rangers FC forward Jermain Defoe is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2020-21 season and according to Gabriel Agbonlahor, the 38-year-old could be on his way out in the summer.
He told Football Insider: “It’s hard at Rangers because Kemar Roofe is younger and is a good striker and Alfredo Morelos is a good striker.
“I feel like if Rangers do win the league, which it looks like they’re going to do and if they get to the latter stages of the Europa League, which it looks like they’re going to do, they’re probably going to attract better players now and a top striker.
“Steven Gerrard won’t want to sit on the squad he’s got – he’ll want to keep getting better and better.
“Jermain Defoe will be hoping to play longer and I’m sure any Championship side would love to have him in their side.”
Defoe has played in nine games in the league this season, scoring just two goals so Steven Gerrard will not be too worried about him leaving.
But there’s a big chance that Alfredo Morelos could also be heading for greener pastures in the summer and if both these players were to leave then there will be a massive void in the attacking department.
Thankfully, if Defoe is moving out then Rangers FC will save £1.5million-a-year in the form of wages which they can then use to bring in a top-class striker for the next season.
Also, Morelos is one of the best forwards in the whole of the SPFL and the Gers will be quoting a massive price for the sale of the Colombian.
As per TransferMarkt, Morelos is valued at £10.8 million so even the sale of the 24-year-old will bring in a lot of financial reserves, which Steven Gerrard can use to bring in apt replacements.
