Liverpool eyeing a summer move for this former Man Utd flop: Here’s why they will miss out

Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyonnais, 11) wartet am Boden auf die Gelbe Karte, Verwarnung, yellow card für den Gegner

Premier League side Liverpool happen to be the latest club who have shown an interest in signing Lyon’s Memphis Depay as a free agent this summer.

Marca claim: “Lyon have all but given up hope of retaining Memphis Depay beyond the end of this season, but the Dutchman will leave with a glowing reference from the club’s president.

“Depay has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona and has so for shown no inclination to sign an extension with Lyon.

“The Netherlands forward has other offers on the table, including from Juventus and Liverpool, but is thought to have a preference for Barcelona.”

Memphis Depay turned out to a major flop for Manchester United during his first big stint with a major club but since then, he’s turned around his career at Lyon and this season, he’s already scored 14 goals and provided nine assists in 30 Ligue 1 games.

And since he is out of contract at Lyon this summer, signing him for free will be a wonderful bit of business from Liverpool. But there are a few reasons why the Anfield outfit are not likely to get their hands on the 27-year-old.

Why Liverpool are not likely to sign Memphis Depay:

Liverpool aren’t the only club who are interested in signing Depay this summer with clubs like Juventus and Barcelona also in the mix.

And as per the rumours, Memphis Depay seems to be interested in moving to Barcelona due to the Ronald Koeman factor. Koeman desperately wants to bring in the forward and even Depay will love to play under his former Netherlands manager.

Another big reason why Memphis Depay is not expected to choose a move to Liverpool is because Klopp already has players like Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane amongst his ranks so the 27-year-old will have to fight for his place if he joins the Merseyside outfit.

And after having three remarkable seasons in France, the last thing Depay will want is to prove his worth all over again.

At Liverpool, he will not be guaranteed playing-time but Koeman can provide that cushion at Barcelona.

Liverpool will obviously give it their all to try and bring in Memphis Depay in the summer but at the back of their minds, even they will know this deal will be really hard to pull off.
