Just 48 hours after the European Super League was announced, close to half a dozen sides are already in the process of backtracking.

Initially, 12 clubs were being called the founding members of the Super League but as per the latest reports, clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona are planning to exit the tournament.

Bayern Munich and Dortmund had already rejected the offer to join the Super League and along with the three above-mentioned clubs, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid are also planning to withdraw.

This comes after the Super League announcement was met with huge negative criticism from the pundits as well as fans. Large crowds gathering outside their respective side’s grounds to hold protests. Right now, there’s no official announcement but the clubs are said to be backing off primarily due to the uproar from their fans.

But if a report in the Daily Mail is correct then money is the main motivator for this u-turn as well.

Mail cite RMC Sport saying: “UEFA are plotting a £6bn response to the controversial European Super League, with the governing body reportedly planning to create a new Champions League with financial backing from a London firm.

“According to Bloomberg via RMC Sport, UEFA are looking to hit back with a revamped version of the Champions League with £6bn funding, providing a larger income to those clubs competing in the competition.

“UEFA are reportedly working with a London-based British investment fund to conjure up a new version of the prestigious tournament.

“The initial budget of this tournament would be worth £3.9bn, rising to £6bn, and is being considered in collaboration with European teams who reject or are not involved in the Super League, as well as any of the 12 clubs that decide to turn their backs on the breakaway league.”

There’s no doubt UEFA were so angry with this new tournament cause they would be losing out on a lot of money if teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United were no longer going to play in the UCL or the UEL.

And it looks like they just went out and offered a better deal to all these 12 clubs.

Money was the main motivator for the emergence of the Super League and now that UEFA are promising the same, there’s no need for these clubs to rub their fans in the wrong way and move out of the European Club Association.
