Former PSG striker Edinson Cavani is no longer heading to Benfica next season and there’s a chance that Manchester United might try and sign him up.

Benfica have backed out of the deal due to the forward’s excessive wages demands and Benfica’s director of football Rui Costa has gone on record to claim that they are no longer interested in the 33-year-old.

“Everyone knows that Benfica were interested in Cavani, we proposed him, but that ball is no longer in our court,” Costa said, as reported.

“We ended our part in the negotiations because we can’t do more than we have already done.

“This matter is completely closed on our side. I don’t want to give the impression of having reopened anything, because we are not going to reopen.”

“It was not possible, so we will create other solutions. We cannot now think of things that are not possible.”

Will Man United reignite their interest in Edinson Cavani?

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried to sign Edinson Cavani during the January transfer window but the deal did not materialize and the Premier League outfit had to eventually settle for Odion Ighalo.

But now that he is a free agent, chances are the OT outfit will make a move for him once again in the coming weeks.

Solskjaer is looking to add a new No 9 to his first-team squad for the 2020-21 season and the 33-year-old will undoubtedly be the perfect short-term solution.

Man United should have no issues in making a move for someone as talented as Edinson Cavani but since he’s a free agent, the Uruguayan will be demanding massive wages, something that the Red Devils should be ready to offer.
