Arsenal are in a midfield crisis and it’s an open secret that the club are trying to sign a new central midfielder during the ongoing transfer window. And amidst several players, the name of ex-Liverpool man Gini Wijnaldum has also popped up.

Thomas Partey has left for the Africa Cup of Nations while the Gunners have also allowed Ainsley Maitland-Niles to join AS Roma on a loan deal. And Mikel Arteta has now admitted that he is really short in this particular department.

Several names have been doing the rounds as the Gunners scout a new midfielder and according to Ian Wright, his former side should try and bring in Gini Wijnaldum.

Wright said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, via Metro: ‘I saw Wijnaldum’s name [linked with Arsenal]. That would be amazing. A loan signing from PSG.

‘Someone like that in the midfield. Of that experience. He is a Premier League winner. Just to help with the youngsters and a Sambi Lokonga just to keep it going.

‘Then, they can add to the squad and, all of a sudden, Arsenal can start challenging and challenging seriously.’

Will Arsenal make a move for Gini Wijnaldum?

Gini Wijnaldum moved to PSG last summer with a lot of hope but the former Liverpool man has been highly disappointed. A move to France as a free agent was supposed to be a step up in his career but it’s turned out to be anything but that.

The midfielder has made only nine starts in the Ligue 1 so far and he has an average rating of just 6.9 out of 10. In the Champions League, he’s played only 262 minutes.

Arsenal aren’t the only Premier League side who are being linked with the 31-year-old as Newcastle United and Everton are also in the mix. But if the Gunners are serious about signing him then we don’t see Wijnaldum heading anywhere else.

Obviously, the midfielder will have to be given a guarantee of regular starts only then will he agree to leave PSG during the middle of the season. And with Granit Xhaka being the current partner to Thomas Partey this shouldn’t be too big a task.
